Madrid Airport to City Center: Metro, Bus, Train or Taxi?
How to get from Madrid airport to the city center: €33 flat taxi, €5 Airport Express, Metro line 8 or Cercanías from T4. Pick by terminal and bags.
The easiest way from Madrid airport to the city center is a taxi: a flat €33 (about $37) to anywhere inside the M-30 ring road, day or night, with no surcharges. On a budget with light bags, take the Airport Express bus for €5 (about $5.60) or Metro line 8 for €4.50 to €5 (about $5 to $5.60). Landing at Terminal 4 and staying near Atocha or Chamartín? The Cercanías train goes straight there.
| Option | Cost | Time | Runs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | €33 flat (about $37) | Depends on traffic | 24/7 | Checked bags, late arrivals, 2+ people |
| Airport Express bus | €5 (about $5.60) | About 30 min, Atocha to T1 | 24/7 | Hotels near Cibeles, Atocha or O’Donnell |
| Metro line 8 | €4.50–€5 (about $5–$5.60) | 12–20 min to Nuevos Ministerios | 6 a.m.–1:30 a.m. | Light bags, hotel near a Metro stop |

Madrid airport to city center: which option should you take?
Start with two questions: which terminal you land at, and how much you’re carrying. The train only serves T4, and the bus changes its route at night.
- Landing at T4, staying near Atocha, Recoletos or Chamartín: Cercanías line C-1.
- Hotel near Cibeles, Atocha or O’Donnell, light bags: Airport Express bus.
- Hotel near a Metro stop, daytime, light bags: Metro line 8.
- Kids, big bags, a group, or after 11:30 p.m.: taxi.
Taxi: the €33 flat fare
Every official taxi charges a fixed €33 (about $37) between the airport and any address inside the M-30 ring road. It applies 24 hours a day, every day, and no surcharge can be added. The 2026 fares took effect on January 1, 2026, and the airport flat fare stayed the same.
Official Madrid taxis are white with a diagonal red band and the city emblem on the front door. A green light means the cab is free. At the airport, take a taxi only from the marked rank, with a blue sign and a white “T”, right outside arrivals. All taxis accept credit cards.
If your hotel is outside the M-30, the flat fare doesn’t apply. Short trips (under 9 km) pay the airport minimum fare, and longer ones run on the meter.
In a Rick Steves forum thread, most travelers recommend the taxi when you’re jet-lagged and carrying luggage.
Airport Express bus (line 203)
The Airport Express costs €5 (about $5.60), according to the operator, EMT. Pay on board in cash, with bills of €20 or less, or tap a contactless card or phone. This ticket can’t be loaded onto the Metro’s Multi card.
The bus runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, every 15 to 20 minutes by day and every 35 minutes at night. Service is limited on December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1.
- Daytime (6 a.m.–11:30 p.m.): stops at O’Donnell, Plaza de Cibeles and Atocha station.
- Night (11:30 p.m.–6 a.m.): the bus starts and ends at Plaza de Cibeles and skips Atocha.
The ride from Atocha to T1 takes about 30 minutes. Add about 5 minutes for T2 and 5 more for T4. Suitcases under 23 kg (51 lb) ride free.
Metro line 8
Line 8 has two airport stations, Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 and Aeropuerto T4, and runs to Nuevos Ministerios. It links Nuevos Ministerios with T1–T3 in 12 minutes and with T4 in 20 minutes. Line 8 ends there, so most central hotels require at least one change of line.
An airport single costs €4.50 to €5 (about $5 to $5.60): a regular single of €1.50 to €2 plus a €3 airport fee. You first need a Tarjeta Multi, the reloadable transit card, for €2.50 (about $2.80) at Metro machines or tobacco shops. It’s free if you buy the Tourist Travel Pass for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7 days. The Zone A Tourist Travel Pass also covers the €3 airport fee, but not the Airport Express bus.
The Metro runs from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., with trains every 15 minutes after midnight.
On the Rick Steves forum, several travelers mention stairs at some transfer stations, which is tiring with heavy bags. Others warn about pickpockets on crowded trains, especially when you’re pulling a suitcase.
Cercanías train from Terminal 4
Only Terminal 4 has a train station, one floor below arrivals (level -1). Line C-1 stops there and runs Aeropuerto T4 – Chamartín – Recoletos – Atocha – Príncipe Pío.
A single ticket costs €1.70 to €2.60 (about $1.90 to $2.90), depending on how many zones you cross. Buy it from the machines or the ticket office in the station. If you hold an AVE high-speed train ticket connecting with your flight, the ride is free.
Trains run every 10 to 30 minutes, from about 5 or 6 a.m. until around midnight.
Landing at T1, T2 or T3? The train isn’t a direct option from those terminals.
Landing late at night
After 11:30 p.m., your choices shrink. The Airport Express only goes to Plaza de Cibeles and comes every 35 minutes. The Metro runs until 1:30 a.m., every 15 minutes after midnight. Cercanías trains stop around midnight.
When a booked transfer makes sense
For most trips inside the M-30, the €33 taxi rank is the simplest option. A pre-booked transfer is worth it if you want a driver waiting with a name sign, need child seats, or travel as a group that won’t fit in one taxi.
- Nothing has to be booked ahead: taxis wait at the rank, and the bus and Metro are walk-up.
- Optional, for groups or kids: a pre-booked transfer. The free alternative is the official taxi rank at €33.
- Optional, for heavy Metro use: the Tourist Travel Pass, which includes a free Multi card.
